Workshop Description

The agenda for this workshop is built around the Kirkhart, LaFrance and Nichols Indigenous Evaluation Framework (IEF) which was developed in the belief that evaluation must be responsive to Indigenous priorities of usefulness, restoration, preservation and sovereignty.

Telling Our Stories: An Introduction to Indigenous Approaches to Evaluation will take participants through the four components of the IEF evaluation framework: Creating the Story, Building the Scaffolding, Gathering Information and Engaging Community & Celebrating Learning. The day will include a mix of presentation, small group and large group activities, drawing on the existing knowledge and experience of participants.

Participation in the workshop will contribute to:

  • Enhanced understanding of history and perspectives on evaluation;
  • Enhanced knowledge of an Indigenous Framework for evaluation;
  • Knowledge of ideas and strategies for implementing an Indigenous evaluation.

Larry K. Bremner, CE

Larry has worked in research and evaluation for approximately 40 years with extensive experience in both qualitative and quantitative methods. In 1984 he established Proactive Information Services Inc. to provide social research services to the not-for-profit and public sectors. He has assisted organizations (government ministries, post-secondary institutions, school districts, Indigenous education authorities, community-based agencies, foundations, other NGOs) in meeting their learning and information needs. He has worked throughout Canada including Northern and Indigenous communities, as well as in Central and Eastern Europe and Mongolia.

Larry is a Credentialed Evaluator and is a former National President of the Canadian Evaluation Society (CES). Larry is proud of his Métis heritage and is passionate about issues of equity and access. He believes that participatory approaches to research and evaluation can foster the empowerment of traditionally disenfranchised groups, while at the same time improving our public institutions.

In 2012, Larry was elected National President of the Canadian Evaluation Society for a two-year term. As Past President, he represented CES on the international stage and was the driving force behind the creation of the global EvalPartners network EvalIndigenous which he currently Co-Chairs. In 2017, he was given the CES Service Award.
