About this event
TFS presents the 60th anniversary of veteran director Roger Corman’s The Intruder starring Canadian icon William Shatner. This landmark film about hatred reminds us how we rarely learn from history and how easily we are manipulated by self-serving, narcissistic hatemongers.
Director: Roger Corman
Starring: William Shatner, Frank Maxwell, Beverly Lunsford, Robert Emhardt
“...[A] flammable tale of what happens in a scabrous Southern town when a vicious, young rabble-rouser comes in and tries to block integration in the schools.” The New York Times, 1962. Too raw for its release in 1962, this chilling portrayal of racist mob violence is regarded by Roger Corman as his most important film.
Prior to the screening, TFS Board Member Powys Dewhurst will conduct a live, in-person discussion with York University professor of politics, Dr. Robert E. Latham, focusing on the parallels between this prescient movie and today’s political landscape. Also scheduled is a brief video interview, featuring Roger Corman protégée Alexandria Stapleton, director of Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel.
Please note that the film may be difficult to watch for some viewers as the depiction of racism is raw and the N-word is used casually throughout the film. TFS has chosen to screen the film due to the importance of the theme and its relevance to events happening today.
