Tour Details:

Have you ever wanted to photograph the mountains of Cape Breton Island during the peak of the beautiful fall colours in an all inclusive, small, personable group photo tour?  This is your chance.

Join established photographer, writer, and photo tour operator, Brian Merry, as he shows you the best of the largest mountains on Cape Breton Island during the usual peak of the fall colours.   Sit back, pull out your camera/tripod and enjoy the beautiful locations we’ll visit on our tour of Cape Breton Island during the usual peak of the fall colours.  The timing of the fall colours is not gauranteed, but this is the usual peak of colour of the maple trees on the Cabot Trail.

We’ll base ourselves at the busy little fishing village of Cheticamp just 10 kilometers from the famous Cape Breton Highlands National Park and 5 km from the beautiful sandy beach of La Paige Saint Pierrie.  These are two incredible places to photograph.  The beautiful little motel that will be our base is run by my family.  We'll be dining in the motel dining room, having slide show presentations at night for added landscape photography training and have our meals catered so as to not waste time ordering food and waiting in a restaurant.  Cheticamp is the perfect location for the tour surrounded by World Class landscape photography locations.  Some of the locations we'll visit are only know by locals, I promise you that.  The locations I've scouted out for the tour are the same beautiful little spots I've known about all my life!  Cheticamp is the perfect place to  Cape Breton's most base yourself for a tour of the beautiful landscapes of Cape Breton Island.  All meals and accommodations are included.  Transportation is by shared vehicles.

You can reach Brian at, or toll free at 1-855-763-1114, if you'd like to talk about the tour.

Day 1: Oct. 20, 2017

We’ll meet at 4:30pm at The Cheticamp Motel on Friday, Oct. 20, 2017, for introductions, refreshments and finger food before we head out and shoot the sunset.  After the sunset we’ll head back to the restaurant at the motel for more detailed introductions, dinner and a presentation of the itinerary followed by a Q&A session to provide context and inspiration for the coming days.

Day 2:  Oct. 21, 2017

We’ll start with an early breakfast at the restaurant on site and then with our packed lunches we’ll be off to a sunrise photography session followed by a tour of Western Cape Breton along the Cabot Trial travelling north to some of the best scenery the Cabot Trial has to offer.  We’ll be stopping at classic locations photographing from various vantage points during the day, some of them only locals know about.

We’ll shoot sunset again close to Cheticamp and head back for dinner before a landscape photography presentation and a photo critique of what you’ve photographed so far this weekend.  I’ll finish off with a presentation of my photography workflow in the computer.  I’ll demonstarte my workflow as I edit afew photographs.

Day 3:  Oct. 22, 2017

We’ll start the day with breakfast before sunrise and head out to shoot the sunrise once again utilizing the techniques presented in the presentation on Day 2.   We’ll head back to the motel for check out and then we'll leave for a cruise up the coast of western Cape Breton in a chartered commercial whale watching boat tour to experience the beautiful fall colours and seabirds from the ocean.*  This is a perspective most visiting photographers don’t often enjoy.  This is also the time when fisherman are usually fishing the fall run of Mackerel with hand lines.  It’s possible we’ll have the opportunity to photograph fisherman plying their craft from a perspective approximately 50m away with numerous seabirds flocking around the fishing boats while the fishermen work.  This can provide us a very unique vantage point of commercial fishing.

After our coastal ocean cruise we’ll leave Cheticamp and head south and photograph the famous Margaree Valley in late afternoon light.

Spouse/partners/friends may attend the tour sharing one room (photographer shared room + $595.00 + $150.00 for a second person not photographing on the tour (prehaps your spouse or partner).  Simply buy one ticket at the regular price and email Brian at for payment of the second ticket.  When registering with a spouse/partner/friend rooms must be shared when taking advantage of the discount.

It's recommended to fly into Halifax International Airport and rent a car you reserved there ahead of time.  Cheticamp is a 4 hour drive from the airport through the spectacular countryside of Nova Scotia.

From the Halifax International Airport drive to highway 102 exiting the airport grounds.  Turn right onto hwy 102 and travel north to Truro, NS.  When hwy 102 ends 4 kms past Truro turn right, west, onto hwy 104 and drive to Cape Breton Island.  Once accross the causeway onto Cape Breton Island in Port Hastings head west (left) along the shoreline traveling on route 19 all the way to Cheticamp.  The scenery along this road is beautiful so I do reccomend allowing for some time ot do some landscape photography before you arrive in Cheticamp.

Extending your trip:

You may want to arrive a few days earlier and photograph some of the beautiful landscapes on the mainland of Nova Scotia while basing yourself out of Halifax.  Spectacular landscapes within an hour drive of the city include:  The world famous Peggy's Cove lighthouse which is a mere 30 minute drive from Halifax and you can park 100 meters from the light.  I recommend being there for a sunrise while you're in Halifax.  You may also want to visit the Minas Basin, Annapolis Valley, the Eastern Shore, Prospect Cove and the Shubinacadie River Valley.  The maple trees turn to their fall colours around Halifax about a week before they do in Cape Breton.  If you're going to extend your trip you should do it before the tour starts as opposed to after the tour.  You won't be disappointed if you do.

*  The whale cruise boat tour is weather dependant and the captain of the boat will decide when, where and if the boat will set sail.  Your safety and comfort is the primary goal of the whale cruise.
