TOPIC: "How Dams Age"

There are approximately 85 dam projects in the Province of Saskatchewan. The large majority of these dams are earth embankment structures. Furthermore, the majority of these structures were built several decades ago, with the average age being approximately 60 years. The material properties of an earth embankment and its foundation changes as it ages. This presentation will discuss these changes, reasons for the soil property differences from construction to current condition, other impacts on dam safety from owning and operating older embankment dams, and provide recommendations on how to mitigate the effects of soil aging in embankment dams and their foundations. Selected Saskatchewan case studies will be used to demonstrate the changes in soil characteristics in earth embankment dams due to soil aging.

PRESENTER DETAILS:

Chris Hill is a Professional Engineer in Regina who has worked for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada for 14 years. Of which the last seven years he has been employed as the Dam Safety Engineer in the Water Infrastructure Division. The Water Infrastructure Division currently owns and operates several Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA) dams. Chris is currently in his final semester of his Masters of Engineering program at the University of Regina and is very appreciative to the Regina Geotechnical Group for allowing him the opportunity to present this information.
