In an environment of rising competition for available resources, the art and science of philanthropy will be an increasingly important area to strengthen by the staff and volunteers of non-profit and charitable organizations. Central to non-profit and charitable organizations’ sustainability is the ability to speak effectively and efficiently about their work to key audiences, current donors, and potential donors. Also important is the art of nurturing the relationships with donors past the initial and/or yearly gift as well as the science of accepting various types of gifts.

United Way’s Learning Centre is pleased to partner with Patricia Hardy, founder of the Tunnelwood Group, to bring you ‘The Art & Science of Philanthropy’. This course focuses on the art and science of facilitating philanthropic gifts and establishing the foundations for philanthropic activity.

Workshop Overview

Participants will leave the session with:

  • An understanding of what philanthropy is and be able to articulate what it means to them and how it is practiced in their own organizations;
  • Have an understanding of the science of year round fund development and the art of year round stewardship;
  • Have an understanding about developing and implementing various methods of fundraising and an understanding of the science of accepting various types of gifts (including cash, property, securities, bequests);
  • Be able to develop an annual operational plan and a fund raising strategy based on analysis, assessment and strategic thinking; and
  • Have a good understanding of professional and organizational ethics.
