Event description

Description

Francesco I de’ Medici, ruler of Tuscany from 1574-87, neglected the affairs of the state in favour of focusing his energy and resources on his lover, Bianca Cappello, and his intellectual pursuits, such as alchemy. This generated animosity towards Francesco and Bianca at home and abroad. The artistic projects commissioned by the couple both contributed to and responded to their resulting negative public image. This course explores how these works served Francesco and Bianca’s individual interests, as well as the responses the works elicited from others.
