Description

THE BLANKET EXERCISE: Interactive Learning about Indigenous Rights and History in Canada

Come together to participate the Blanket Exercise, an impactful and safe experience that aims to foster understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. This workshop is an interactive learning experience that teaches Indigenous rights and history, engages participants in the reconciliation process, and enhances knowledge and skill-base in working alongside individuals with Indigenous backgrounds.

Developed in response to the 1996 Report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples—which recommended education on Canadian-Indigenous history as one of the key steps to reconciliation - the Blanket Exercise covers over 500 years of history in this 3-hour workshop.

Participants take on the roles of Indigenous peoples in Canada, covering periods of pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization and resistance. Facilitators will engage participants on emotional and intellectual levels, effectively increasing empathy for the experience of Indigenous peoples. The exercise is followed by a talking circle, or debriefing session, in which participants can discuss the experience as a group.

This workshop will be facilitated by Stephanie Miniely of Youth With A Mission (YWAM) Fort McMurray. YWAM has been operating for 11 years and takes focus on serving the Indigenous population in our area to support removing barriers faced.
