Cocktails & Conversation

The business of today’s in-house counsel is a solution-driven enterprise. Whether safeguarding corporate interests, managing crises, or offering strategic business advice, it is imperative that in-house lawyers’ stock and trade is value-adding answers.

On May 15, 2018, join LexisNexis Canada, alongside the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association, for an evening of cocktails and conversation including a 1-hour panel discussion featuring leading in-house lawyers who will share their experiences, insights, and guidance for making your in-house counsel practice a successful solutions business (1.0 CPD).

Andras Vagvolgyi, TELUS

Andras Vagvolgyi is a Vice President of Legal Services at TELUS Communications Inc. In this role, he leads a team of lawyers dedicated to providing strategic counsel and support in diverse areas of responsibility that include corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, venture capital investment, real estate and pension investments. Andras also serves as a trustee of the Telecommunications Workers Pension Plan.

Andras has been a member of the in-house counsel team at TELUS since 1996.

He received his Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta and his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Victoria.

Andras is proud to be associated with an organization that places top priority on putting our customers first and its “We Give Where We Live” community-giving philosophy. His volunteer activities include trail building and maintenance for the North Shore Mountain Bike Association and providing strategic planning guidance for the New Westminster Family Place Society, a charitable organization that provides support to families in need in the community.

Andras lives with his wife Karen and two teenage children, Tiemen and Tina, in New Westminster, BC. The family also spends time in Budapest, Hungary where they have family ties.

When not working or driving to his kids’ hockey and lacrosse games, Andras spends his free time skiing with the family and cycling (road, cyclocross and mountain).

Tiffany Jung

General Counsel, Buyatab

Tiffany Jung is General Counsel for Buyatab Online Inc. Buyatab, a leader in digital gifting, has been named as one of Canada’s fastest growing companies in the Deloitte Technology Fast 50™ awards. Tiffany provides practical advice on legal and strategic matters in the tech space. She has a combination of firm and in-house experience.

Tiffany holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a minor in Computing Science from Simon Fraser University and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Western Ontario, and is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and the Law Society of British Columbia. She is also a co-founder of “The Basic Stitches”.

Chris Beardsmore

Director, Legal & Associate General Counsel, Canucks Sports & Entertainment

As Director, Legal & Associate General Counsel, Chris Beardsmore provides a range of legal services relating to the business of Canucks Sports & Entertainment. In particular, Chris is responsible for providing advice and legal support for many of the key revenue driving areas of CSE’s business, including tickets and premium hospitality (both Canucks games and live events), corporate partnerships, food and beverage and merchandise.

Chris has practiced law in Vancouver for over 14 years, including 8 years as in-house counsel in the sport & entertainment industry. He was born and raised in Victoria, BC and attended the University of British Columbia where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources Conservation and a Bachelor of Laws and received the Wesbrook Scholar designation. He began his legal career in the Vancouver office of McCarthy Tétrault LLP, and since 2007 has held in-house legal counsel positions, including three years as Director and Legal Counsel for the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. He joined Canucks Sports & Entertainment in 2013.

Chris lives in North Vancouver with his wife and their two children. He enjoys travelling and has lived in France and Australia. He is an avid sports fan and roots primarily for this three favourite teams: the Seattle Seahawks, England FC and, of course, his beloved Vancouver Canucks.

Brian Dartnell

Associate General Counsel, Electronic Arts

Brian Dartnell, Associate General Counsel at Electronic Arts is responsible for EA’s Global Compliance Team, employment matters in North America and the delivery of legal services to EA’s Canadian operations. Brian joined EA as Legal Counsel in 2005. Currently EA operates in 5 Provinces with more than 2000 full and part-time employees based in Canada. EA develops and produces video games for a variety of platforms including the Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox.

Brian started his career as an Associate at Owen Bird Law Corporation and Gowlings WLG as a labour and employment litigator. When he is not enjoying playing the occasional video game, Brian enjoys spending time running or riding his bike. Brian holds a bachelor of Laws degree from York University, Osgood Hall Law School.

Julie Chapman - Moderator

General Counsel, LexisNexis Canada

Julie has worked in the legal industry for 12 years, gaining experience predominantly as in-house counsel, but also on Bay Street in private practice. As a seasoned general counsel, she is passionate about advancing the rule of law and the upward mobility of women in the profession. In addition to practicing law, she volunteers in various ways including as an Executive Committee member of the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association (of the CBA), providing pro bono legal work for Pro Bono Ontario, and as a mentor for the Law Practice Program at Ryerson University. Outside of the office, Julie enjoys marathon running, reading, and especially spending time with her three young children.

This event is open to senior and general counsel, privacy officers, compliance officers and legal professionals alike working within a corporation. This event is closed to the general open public.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
