Description

The Changing Cyber Battlefield – A Report from the Frontlines of a Ransomware Attack

On May 27, 2016, the University of Calgary experienced a malware attack from a new variant of ransomware. An anti-virus for this variant was not created by anti-virus companies until a few days later. Some systems were affected, including one of the major email systems which had over 9000 users. Cyber insurance had been purchased and provided easily-accessed resources. The Incident Command team worked with a Cyber Breach coach and Cyber Security consultants to resolve the situation. Specialized communications were put into place as e-mail could not be accessed. The Emergency Operations group and Crisis Management Teams also played roles during the event. The University made a decision to pay the ransom after significant consideration and chose to make that information public.

This session will share some of the knowledge gained through the process including suggestions for what to put in place prior to the event, items that worked well or were challenges during the response and what role Risk Management can play during this type of situation.

The presentation will be from 2-3pm with a welcome reception to follow from 3-5pm. Cost is $20 for members $30 for non-members. Price includes one drink and appetizers.
