Abstract:

In December 2014, Lundin Gold Inc. acquired one of the largest, highest grade undeveloped gold deposits in the world today from Kinross Gold Corp. Lundin had only 18 months to complete a feasibility study and file an Environmental Impact Assessement in order to meet the Ecuadorian government regulations and file the equivalent of a mining license application. The Exploitation Application was approved in July 2016 and in October 2016, Lundin Gold received its Environmental License and early earth works began in November 2016. Today construction is well underway with over 1,300 personnel on site.

The development of Fruta del Norte represents one of the first large mine developments in Ecuador. The success of this project is based on several factors: people, fiscal regime, availability of infrastructure and sustainable development. The ability of Lundin Gold to show the people of Ecuador that development of a large scale mine can be done responsibly is a critical factor. This presentation will cover the aspects of the project, the people behind it and the importance of a comprehensive sustainable development program.
