POSTPONED TO OCTOBER (TIME TBD)

SEGD Toronto is pleased to bring to you The Cool School: STORY OF THE FERUS ART GALLERY as part of our education series. The film is a 2008 American documentary film about the rise of the Los Angeles contemporary art scene. It was directed by Morgan Neville and narrated by Jeff Bridges. This event offers an opportunity to network, share knowledge, and connect with fellow EGD practitioners.

The movie is free to both members and non-members; and will be featured at Entro Communications’ design studio. Space is limited - please reserve your free ticket.

About the film:

“The Cool School,” a breezy, lively documentary about a thin slice of the Los Angeles fine art scene in the 1950s, is easy on the eyes, and the ears too. The focal point of this historical gloss is the Ferus Gallery, which opened in 1957 and soon became a cultural hub with shows dedicated to local talent like Ed Ruscha, Robert Irwin, Ed Moses, Wallace Berman and Ed Kienholz and a then-unknown out-of-towner with a fondness for Campbell’s Soup named Andy Warhol. Near the northern end of the centrally located boulevard called La Cienega (“the swamp” in Spanish), not far from the Sunset Strip, Ferus was founded by Mr. Kienholz and Walter Hopps, a Los Angeles native who as a teenager had met Marcel Duchamp. The movie’s director, Morgan Neville, tells what followed through an often fascinating, visually charming and intelligently edited mix of found footage, home movies, still images and contemporary interviews, ably assisted by a jazz score and narration from the actor (and photographer) Jeff Bridges. — Manohla Dargis, NYTimes.com
