About The DementiAbility Methods:

About this Event

The DementiAbility Methods offer an innovative, evidence-based, non-pharmacological, person-centred approach to working with older adults who are living with dementia and other forms of cognitive loss. Using research from diverse disciplines in aging and dementia, this two-day program will highlight important connections between the brain, environments, personal narratives and behavioural outcomes, with the objective of providing new ways of thinking about, and addressing, the needs of those in our care. The aim is to help carers understand and support each person in a prepared environment, offering physical, social and cognitive strategies that focus on enabling, enriching and enhancing abilities, according to needs and interests, while adding meaning, purpose, choice, and joy to each day. Research has provided clear evidence of enhanced function when memory cueing, sequencing & other such strategies have been put in practice. Also, increased levels of engagement, success, satisfaction and participation in daily life are witnessed when DementiAbility approaches are implemented in a prepared environment. Participants in this workshop will learn about memory (declarative and procedural) and they will learn how to think differently about each person and each situation. They will discover how to create supportive strategies/interventions according to what we know and what we observe (using the DementiAbility WOW Model). Workshop participants will engage in practical “hands-on” group work that is aimed at putting these methods into action. The first day of the program focuses on the facts (knowledge) and the second day focuses on putting the concepts into practice for specific clients, activities and environments.

Please note this event is reserved for Mississauga Halton LHIN funded Health Service Providers and a limited number of pre-approved Long-Term Care Mississauga Halton LHIN BSO staff.
