The Development of an Advocacy Toolkit
Event Information
About this Event
We need help from Somali youth to create an advocacy toolkit that addresses how the Canadian criminal justice system impacts their lives.
Special Guests:
Ayderus Alawi: commitment to community issues has spanned over 10 years and has been reflected in the work/projects he has participated in. This work has included a position as a Youth Worker in a Toronto District School Board suspension program where he routinely interacted with a diverse group of youth who had negative interactions with the police and other criminal justice actors. These interactions required that he advocate on their behalf in court as many of the youth that he worked with were arbitrarily detained, searched and assaulted by Police Officers and Toronto Community Housing Security Officers. This work also included facilitating workshops that discussed their rights and responsibilities when interacting with the Police and Toronto Community Housing Security Officers and assisting them with the Police Complaints process.
Dates: Starting March 6th, there will be a workshop every week on Saturday until May 15th, 2021
