The Do-Re-Mi of Austrian Wines
Overview
How do you say a grape like Grüner Veltliner?
How do you say these words and how they’re spelt?
German words for grapes that come from Austria
Like Blauer Portugieser, or Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt!
Tonight at Metro Liquor, we’re tasting wines from Austria. This country has a serious wine culture, with Heuriger taverns opening to serve freshly made wine in autumn and even a section of the country named Weinviertel, which means “Wine Quarter”. There are even significant vineyards in the capital itself, Vienna! After the First World War, Austria was even the third-largest wine producing country in the world!
However, in the 1980s, Austrian wine’s reputation was wrecked in a major scandal. In the immediate aftermath, Austria imposed some of the most strict wine regulations in the world, and while not as big in production as it has been in the past, it has certainly been earning its reputation again!
