Event description

Description

The road to the top of the technical leadership ladder is full of twists and turns and once you are there, the job doesn’t always look the way you might expect. Nobody understands what the role entails and how to get there better than Alex Millar, Marcelo Cortes, and Mike Kirkup. Between them, the three technical leaders bring decades of experience at companies like Google, Microsoft, IBM, Blackberry, Square, and most recently, as CTOs helping to scale startups from scratch.

In this month’s Terminal Tech Talk moderated by Canada’s tech pioneer, Marc Morin, our panel will share their personal stories and explore what it means to be a great manager, scale an engineering team, set employees up to succeed, and the evolution of their roles as their companies have grown. If you are an engineer or an aspiring leader, this is a can’t-miss interactive panel discussion.

MEET THE PANEL

Marcelo Cortes has been building software for over 20 years. He has had leadership roles building many successful products including Google+, Google Hangouts and Square Cash. Most recently he co-founded Faire, a YC Top 100 company he co-founded a year ago where he leads engineering as CTO.

Alex Millar is the co-founder and CTO of Bonfire Interactive, a competitive bidding and RFx platform which empowers modern sourcing teams to make faster, more strategic decisions. Bonfire is reimagining procurement for a world of tech-savvy purchasers, mobile phones, and dynamic networks. Alex leads the engineering and product teams to realize Bonfire’s vision of delivering deeper workflow automation, richer data, and easier collaboration to sourcing teams across the world. Previously, Alex worked at Microsoft, IBM and Blackberry giving him real insight into what it takes to build large-scale, reliable, enterprise-grade software. He holds a degree in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo and was an officer in the Canadian Forces.

Mike Kirkup is the CTO of Encircle, a software company that helps organizations to empower their front end workforce with easy to use process automation tools that allow them to collaborate, collect and share information. As a big supporter of the Waterloo region and startups in general, Mike assists CDMN with a variety of their programs and volunteers with the Waterloo Region Economic Development Corporation board. Prior to Encircle, Mike was the Director of Velocity, the University of Waterloo’s world-renowned startup program. Velocity thrived under Mike's leadership with the successful launches of Vidyard, MappedIn and Thalmic Labs, to name a few. Velocity companies, now numbering in the hundreds, had gone on to raise more than $600M in follow on funding.

MEET THE MODERATOR

Marc Morin is the CEO and co-founder of Auvik Networks. Previously, Marc Co-founded Sandvine and served as chief technology officer, developing the company’s vision and technology strategy. Prior to that, he co-founded PixStream, which was acquired by Cisco Systems for $554 million.
