About this event

While Harlem is best known for its music, food, and culture, the neighborhood also boasts countless artworks — both temporary and permanent — dedicated to remarkable women throughout the decades. Who were these female trailblazers, and what do they represent to this community? From great jazz singers to successful entrepreneurs, it's time to explore a range of independent neighborhood commemorations that tell a collective story of women who made a difference.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the New York City neighborhoods of Central Harlem and Spanish Harlem to uncover modern artworks honoring incredible women who positively impacted their communities.

Led by licensed New York City tour guide Leigh Hallingby, our digital showcase of Harlem's feminist artworks will include:

  • A discussion of 40 highly accomplished women — such as Harriet Tubman, Frida Kahlo, and Madam C.J. Walker — who are celebrated around the neighborhoods with incredible artwork
  • A virtual visit to Central Harlem to stop at two Walks of Fame, several schools named for great women, and mosaics and statues of women who helped a great many people
  • A virtual stroll around Spanish Harlem, with stops at many stunning murals and mosaics that embody the neighborhood’s culture, including one designed by a 105-year-old woman who's still actively creating
  • Stories behind the feminist works of art and their artists, and information on where to see them for yourself

Stick around afterward for a Q&A with Leigh — any and all questions about the the feminist art of Harlem are welcomed and encouraged!
