The Franklin Electric + Hey Major: live at Mills Hardware!

About this Event

Life happens, and it lives on in music. As such, The Franklin Electric reflect formative personal moments on a canvas of indie, folk, and alternative. The Montreal-based collective founded and fronted by Jon Matte transforms experiences into anthems and has done so since emerging on the 2014 debut, This Is How I Let You Down.

Logging nearly 400 shows, they canvased the world alongside everyone from Mumford & Sons, Ben Howard to Edward Sharpe, City and Colour and Half Moon Run. Along the way, 2017’s Blue Ceilings marked a major milestone. Not only did the record produce favourites such as “I Know The Feeling” and “Someone Just Like You,” but it also led to a nomination at the 2018 JUNO® Awards in the category of Breakthrough Group of the Year.

The latter experience set the stage for his next evolution. In Vancouver for the ceremony, Jon identified an endless wellspring of inspiration from the mountains and landscapes of the Canadian West Coast. So, he holed up in Vancouver to write what would become the 2019 EP, In Your Head (Nettwerk) -- and more forthcoming tunes.

“The theme of the EP is the balance between vulnerability and holding on,” Matte elaborates. “I just make honest music for everyday ordinary people. This is what I’m feeling and going through. This is how I explore universal truths we all go through. I always want the art to reflect what’s going on with me.”

Hey Major is formed by the two multi-instrumentalist brothers, Mickaël and Raphaël Fortin. Built on strong britrock influences, the chemistry and history between these boys is audible from the first note, writing what they’ve coined to be “elegant rock.”

In May 2015, the band (then called Orange O’clock) won CBC’s Searchlight contest as Best New Canadian Artist, among 3,000 acts across Canada, with their single “Can't Fight the Feeling”. A year later, among more than 18,000 songwriters across the world, they landed in second place with their song Wax ’n’ Wane at the International Songwriting Competition in Nashville. The band’s first single off their album Crazy Carnival, was picked by Grant Lawrence from CBC music to be part of the monthly playlist “Songs You Need to Hear” and was promoted on NPR Music, BBC Radio 1 and CBC Music.

After spending a month touring Australia earlier this year, Hey Major came back home to finish recording their debut album The Station. The LP was produced in Montreal (Indica Studios) with Peter Edwards and Franz Schuller and mixed by Chris Shaw (Bob Dylan, Weezer, Wilco) and Tim Palmer (David Bowie, Tears for Fears, U2). Inspired by the best of Brit rock and pop, The Station highlights Hey Major’s distinctive rock sound. The songs burst to life with Mickaël’s pristine and emotional vocals, dynamic piano parts and Raphaël’s restrained and consoling drumming. The Station is available on all platforms now.
