The French Connection - Faure Requiem
Event Information
About this event
Much of the music comes from the French romantic tradition and all is inspired by a French connection. The performance will also stream live online.
The concert will include a chamber orchestra and feature the transcendent Requiem in D minor, Op. 48 (1887-1901) by Gabriel Fauré, along with other works in French, Portuguese and Latin. Baritone Bradley Christensen returns to the choir as featured soloist.
Also on the program are the much-loved Panis Angelicus (Bread of Angels), Belgian composer César Franck’s 1872 setting of the Latin hymn with soloist Bradley Christensen and pianist Hye Won (Cecilia) Lee. The choir sings two a cappella French songs from 1883 with words and music by Camille Saint-Saëns – La Calme des nuits (Stillness of the Nights) and Les Fleurs et les arbres (Flowers and Trees). The program opens with Cantique de Jean Racine, composed by Fauré when he was only 19 and a student of Saint-Saëns.
Cantemos, the choir’s accomplished Latin ensemble, completes the program with a boisterous French drinking song ca.1530, and music by Brazilians Heitor Villa-Lobos (Ave Maria, 1938) and contemporary composer Ernani Aguiar (Psalm 150), and Venezuelan composer Cesar Alejandro Carrillo (Salve Regina, for tenors and basses). The Villa-Lobos is sung in Brazilian Portuguese, the Aguiar and Carrillo works in traditional Latin.
