Event description

Description

This workshop enables participants to enter into the pleasures and rewards of reading and talking together about poems. Too many of us “learned” poetry in an academic and stuffy way - made to memorize poems and identify devices that poets use - without experiencing a poem’s power and relevance to our own lives. In this workshop, we will read 6-8 poems together and discuss our personal responses to each, including the poem’s meaning and the way we resonate with its emotion. We will read poems about anger, remorse, sadness, jubilation, love, loss, and more—all of which we've felt ourselves. If participants want to, we may also talk about what prompts a poet to write and how she/he proceeds to make something that can have such a magical impact. Invariably people leave saying they want to read and discuss more poems – the whole purpose of the workshop.
