In this Terminal Tech Talk we examine current trends that are significantly impacting organizations, how organizations are adapting to these changes, and what the future looks like.

Ben Davies is CIO at Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, the world's largest private institute for theoretical physics. Perimeter's building in Canada is also the only institution in the world donning Dr. Stephen Hawking's name. We will explore a number of questions including:

  3. The future of IT in the coming years and how to adapt.

About the Moderator Ben Davies:

Ben Davies is the CIO of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. He was hired as its inaugural CIO to guide the institute through a significant expansion and to carry out a broad digital transformation process ranging from blackboards to super-computing. He has over twenty five years of experience in strategic planning, IT operations management, and technology consulting with organisations in North America, Europe and Asia. Ben started his career as a software developer programming GIS systems for leading edge marketing research and socio-economic impact assessment solutions. Since that time, he has held progressive IT management positions in multiple sectors including pharmaceutical, software manufacturing, transportation, travel, and consulting. He was co-founder and president of a managed services company, has been involved in several startups, and has been a member of a number of non-profit boards. Ben is a recently certified chief information security officer with a keen interest in management theory, organizational behaviour, and technology trends. He has published a computer game, is an avid squash player and traveler.

About Joe AbiDaoud

Joe is a senior IT executive with over 20 years’ experience in the field of technology . He has spent the last 13 years in leadership roles and has worked in several industries including banking, telecommunications, outsourcing, retail energy, and mining. Joe has earned a reputation as a transformational leader helping organizations realize IT’s potential as the evolution of technology persists. He recently graduated with a Masters Science Degree in Technology Management from Laurier University and joined Yamana Gold as their head of IT in Feb 2017. Since joining Yamana Joe has led the development of the innovation program, cloud and digital strategies, as well, the cyber security roadmap.


About Karl Martineau:

Karl is an entrepreneurial CIO, who has led various strategic digital transformations across industry. His background within corporate information risk management, public legal services along with Enterprise and Cloud technologies is helping provide Legal Aid Ontario a modern foundation for the expansion of its client, provider and enterprise digital strategies. Over the past few years his involvement in blockchain and machine learning (AI) research and development is helping establish a strategic foundation for Legal Aid Ontario to explore the usage of these technologies. His background within Information Risk Management at KPMG Canada, along with Strategic Technology Leadership at Legal Aid Ontario in concert with recent Queens University School of Business studies, continues to shape his contributions within the advancement of Legal Tech.


About Alastair Angus:

Alastair Angus is Head of Global Banking & Markets IT at HSBC Bank Canada, where he is responsible for delivering solutions for the Bank’s Capital Markets and Investment Banking businesses. Alastair also built and oversees HSBC Global Banking & Markets’ near-shore IT group in Toronto who work with colleagues in numerous other countries to deliver technology used across the Bank’s global locations. Alastair was previously Global Head of Equity Synthetics Technology for HSBC Global Banking & Markets based in London, before relocating to Canada in 2017. Prior to joining HSBC, Alastair held a number of positions within capital markets technology at Credit Suisse, UBS Investment Bank, MF Global and Morgan Stanley in London, Edinburgh and New York. Alastair holds a BEng in Computer Science & Electronics from the University of Edinburgh.
