Graham E. Fuller, former CIA Operations Officer, will discuss the nature of new international forces in an increasingly multi-polar world.

The University of Victoria's Centre for Global Studies invites you to the 3rd Biennial Gordon Smith Lecture Series with special guest Graham E. Fuller presenting on "The Future of Global Power in an Era of Declining US Dominance."

Graham E. Fuller is an Adjunct Professor of History at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver and a Visiting Tutor at Quest University in Squamish. He has a BA and MA from Harvard University in Russian and Middle East studies. He worked for 20 years as a CIA Operations Officer, seventeen of which were spent overseas in Turkey, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Afghanistan and China. He later served as Vice-Chair of the National Intelligence Council at CIA, with overall responsibility for national level strategic forecasting.

After leaving the public service, Mr. Fuller was a Senior Political Scientist at the RAND Corporation where the authored many publications on the Middle East and Islamic Movements. He speaks several Middle Eastern languages as well as Russian and Chinese.

His books include "The Center of the Universe: the Geopolitics of Iran"; "The Geopolitics of Islam and the West"; "Turkey Faces East: Turkey’s New Geopolitics from the Balkans to Central Asia"; "The Arab Shi’a; and The Future of Political Islam"; "The New Turkish Republic: Turkey’s Pivotal Role in the Middle East"; "A World Without Islam"; "Three Truths and a Lie—a Memoir",; and “Turkey and the Arab Spring: Leadership in the Middle East". His first novel was “Breaking Faith: A Novel of Espionage and an American’s Crisis of Conscience in Pakistan.” His second novel, "Bear: A Novel of Pipelines, First Nations, and Eco-Violence", is set in British Columbia. The topic of this talk is "The Future of Global Power in an Era of Declining US Dominance”. It will focus on the nature of new international forces in a multi-polar world, the future of democracy, and Canada’s place in it.
