Event Details

The Punjabi Market is rapidly changing. Is the change for the better or is it going away from tradition? How do we honour the past, and dream for the future? We'd love to hear your thoughts and ideas on how we could shape the future of this important neighbourhood!

The Punjabi Market has long been a popular cultural-commercial hub of restaurants, accountants, law and dental offices, banks, sweet shops, jewellery stores, fabric and clothing stores, grocers and other businesses. These businesses have long served the local South Asian community, and provided a destination for visitors. In the last decade the once-thriving Punjabi Market has been experiencing an increase in empty storefronts and the loss/relocation of iconic neighbourhood businesses. Recently, the City of Vancouver consultation process for the rezoning of 6505, 6507, and, 6541 Main Street generated conversations on the historic resonance, present day importance, and lasting legacy of Vancouver’s Punjabi Market. The public expressed an interest in exploring the the commercial vibrancy of the Punjabi Market shopping area including beautification, cultural spaces, business diversity, and community engagement.

The City of Vancouver has hired LOCO BC (Amy Robinson), in partnership with Masala Consulting (Ajay Puri), DIG360 Consulting (David Ian Gray), and Modus (Rob Barrs), to complete this work. This project will develop a vision for the future of Punjabi Market, including the planning and retail mix considerations to create a vibrant retail centre that considers the needs of current and future residents, while paying appropriate homage to the area’s past.

As part of the project's stakeholder engagement, we are seeking the input of key area residents, businesses, community elders, property owners and leasing agents to help understand how to revitalize the area while sustaining its historic importance for future generations. As a recognized community leader we'd like to invite you to one of two special meetings planned for the project. These meetings provide an opportunity to learn about the current state of the area, and share your ideas about the future vision for the neighbourhood.

We have another event scheduled on November 1st if this date/time doesn't work for you.

Please RSVP as soon as possible. If you are unable to attend, please let us know if someone from your organization or your network could attend on your behalf. Even those who are unable to attend will have the opportunity to fill out the pre-meeting survey, read and provide comments on the summary notes. If you know of others who we should send this invitation to, do let us know.

Attendance at one of the forums requests a commitment of the following:

- Fill in this 10-15 minute pre-event survey (which we hope will capture your ideas and thoughts for the future of Punjabi Market)

- Review the post-meeting summary notes

- Provide feedback on the post-meeting summary notes

Stakeholders will be acknowledged for their time and ideas in the report to City of Vancouver staff (by end of December 2017).
