Event description
This panel is centered on the future of care for seniors, as we see a growing need for infrastructure in the coming years.

About this Event

Canadians aged 65 or older account for 16.9% of the national population, and by 2023, that number is expected to reach 20%. This represents a major shift in our demographics and a need to plan for our aging population.

This panel is centered on the future of care for seniors, as we see a growing need for infrastructure in the coming years. We will explore ideas that are driving capital investment in this market, including an exploration of Continuing Care Hub - creating a campus of care with a range of services to support a variety of needs.

Join us to learn about our panelists' vision for care, upcoming capital projects, methods of procurement delivery and what they look for from professional services firms, to help you win business with them.

Panelists:

  • Daniel Fontaine, Chief Executive Officer, BC Care Providers Association
  • Ron Pike, Executive Director, Elim Village
  • Martin Gardner, Sr. Director, Operations & Business Development, VRS

Panelists' Bios:

Daniel Fontaine, Chief Executive Officer, BC Care Providers Association

Daniel Fontaine works as the Chief Executive Officer for the BC Care Providers Association, the leading voice in representing non-government operators of seniors' living and wellness services throughout BC. Over the course of his career he has worked in the private and not-for-profit sectors, as well as government.

Daniel is the former weekly civic affairs columnist for 24 Hours Newspaper and political commentator on Global TV & Global BC1 news channel. He actively participated in the weekly civic affairs panel for the top-rated Bill Good Show on CKNW radio. From 2005 to 2008, Daniel also served as the Chief of Staff in the Office of the Mayor of Vancouver.

In 2012 Daniel was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for public service. He was appointed to the Board of Directors for SafeCare BC in 2015 with a mandate to reduce workplace injuries in the long-term care sector. In 2017, Daniel was appointed to the Federal Ministerial Advisory Board on Dementia and supported the development of Canada’s National Dementia Strategy.

Ron Pike, Executive Director, Elim Village

Ron Pike has worked in the Senior Living/Care industry for the past 12 years providing Senior Leadership to the organization of Elim Village, which operates a campus of care community in Surrey and a second campus in development in Chilliwack. In 2012, Ron moved into the role of Executive Director, bringing with him a strong track record of leadership, business insight and strategic thinking.

As a progressive, growing organization, Elim has provided Ron with a unique perspective across the entire spectrum of Senior Living and Care. His direct experience in land development, community design, construction and service provision has given him an understanding of both the challenges and opportunities that need to be leveraged in order to ensure quality of life for older adults, both now and into the future.

Martin Gardner, Sr. Director, Operations & Business Development, VRS

Martin Gardner has over 20 years' experience as an operator in the Senior Living/Care Industry in both the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors. Early in his career, Martin specialized in improving the overall financial and operational performance of numerous under-performing seniors' housing properties across BC. Today, with a strategic focus on quality improvement initiatives, program development and the importance of team building at the site level, Martin’s successful leadership and mentorship style continues to inspire and motivate all VRS employees to collectively achieve operational excellence by developing great corporate and workplace culture.

In just over five years with VRS, Martin has strategically acquired and transitioned 11 existing seniors' residences and has successfully grown the organization to become the second largest NPO operator of seniors' housing in BC serving approximately 1,300 seniors. In addition, VRS has confirmed five new build projects starting in 2020-2021 adding an additional 500+ new seniors' rentals, Independent and Assisted Living units in select communities across BC. This includes VRS’s partnership with the Lark Group to develop 92 affordable housing units for Veterans at the Legion Village in Surrey, which began construction in July 2019.
