Event description
July is beautiful at the Loft! Two incredible exhibits for you to enjoy.

About this event

PLEASE READ!

Thanks to Covid-19, Loft 112 has had to make some adjustments in order to reopen to showcase the work of our community AND observe the safety protocol.

Please note: Despite the recent mask bylaw being rescinded, the Loft will still go ahead with masks and hand sanitizer at least until the end of July 2021. Our windows and doors will be open, —weather permitting— and clean up on the regular with bleach, soap and water.

For the next few months, Loft 112 will showcase various art projects/shows at one time in the Creative Hive space:

The Boxed Story Gallery (30 artists and writers) until June 30

WP Puppets Presents: The Courage Journey Exhibit until July 18

Missing you Monday Traveling Book

In order to attend and enjoy these three shows, you MUST pre-book a one hour ticket as we must limit our viewing numbers to 5 people per hour.

To book: Make sure you are on the right page for either TUES THROUGH FRIDAY or SAT AND SUN. Then click on the date you want to come, choose the time slot you wish to attend and order the number of tickets you would like. That's it!

THE BOXED STORIES GALLERY

This is a truly unique experience for artists and viewers alike! Housed within a vintage card catalogue, the library’s one time answer to organizing a collection of books for readers to locate on a shelf, visitors will be encouraged to discover varied artworks as they open each drawer. The pieces will range from paintings, prints, photography, assemblage, sculpture, writing, etc. There will be catalogs of the exhibit available for purchase as well!

THE COURAGE JOURNEY EXHIBITION BY WP PUPPETS

The Courage Journey exhibition features artwork from WP Puppet Theatre Society’s the VIEW from the Inside program. It was originally curated by The Alberta Foundation for the Arts’ Travelling Exhibition Program (TREX) and toured throughout Alberta for two years.

VIEW is an award-winning program that invites participants to explore their creativity in a friendly, supportive community. In the 8-week course a self- portrait- based puppet is completed, which becomes a nuanced artifact resulting in an amazing legacy project!

The exhibit is comprised of 7 diptychs representing the inner and outer worlds of anonymous workshop participants, as well as two of the facilitators of the workshops, Wendy Passmore-Godfrey and Allan Rosales.

“The exhibition is intended to remind us of the universal nature of mental wellness and to allow us to contemplate the ways in which we all at one time or another wear a mask” wrote Shannon Bingeman, Curator.

Since 2015, WPTS has facilitated VIEW program with a diverse range of participants from Indigenous youth, seniors with Dementia, University students, marginalized young adults and people from across Canada. In 2020 it was pivoted to be delivered online. Everyone is given an identical blank mask and asked to embark on a personal journey of self-reflection. The process has proven to be cathartic. It has highlighted the healing potential of creative practice, fostered a greater sense of community and promoted empathy and understanding across diverse groups of people.

Fall course registration is now open for individuals and we invite organizations or groups to contact us to discuss having the program. For more information please see wppuppet.com

6FTCLOSERYYC

Stay-at-home orders and regulations that required us to keep our distance gave rise to a range of feelings and perspectives outside the norm on both the individual and community level. Everyone dealt with and continues to deal with these factors differently, but everyone can benefit from an outlet. Art’s an outlet; one with few (if any) barriers to entry. This is where the idea of 6ftCloserYYC was born, in hopes to provide an outlet and allow all participants to chase their own creative catharsis: perhaps one of the better side-effects of Covid-19. 6ftCloserYYC exists to promote and spotlight art as a silver lining of this less than shiny reality.

As we cautiously approach our world re-opening, the 6ftCloserYYC team is so excited to showcase a small selection of 6ftCloserYYC pieces at Loft 112 this July. We could not be more thankful for the opportunity to fill the space from top to bottom with the unbelievable pieces our participants have created. The 6ftCloserYYC creators filled each of our 6ft pieces of blank canvas with such care, detail, and true brilliance. We continue to be in complete awe of each piece that is completed and can’t wait to get them on walls for the people of Calgary to see. Come one, come all to reflect on the 6 feet of space that took space in each of our lives, and in our experience brought connection through art.

As the state of this global pandemic remains unknown we continue to spread the invite asking creators of all capacities and calibers to participate, giving us all a shared time capsule of art to mark these trying times. So, we invite everyone to take space for themselves. Maybe that space is the perfect 6ft canvas. DM us @6ftCloserYYC about getting your hands on a canvas and to find out about our local art supply partners, or get started today using your own medium: chalk? Great. Spaghetti flung at a wall? Delicious.

We can’t wait to celebrate what we have all created together. While apart.

MISSING YOU MONDAY

There are many layers of strangeness and struggles to 2020. Not being at art openings and book readings, surrounded by friends and family are certainly on the list. At Loft 112, our rooms were dark but our plans to stay connected continued. Missing You Monday was one such project intended to keep our literary creative culture alive and our writers and artists and community connected. Missing You Monday is a travelling book—received on a Monday passed on to the next artist or writer the following Monday. The week it was in the artist/writer’s possession, a new page was produced—art, text, or a combination of the two. We are excited to share the beautiful work that was born of this concept.
