Description

April 23 - 29 is Fashion Revolution Week.

Factories present a stable job for the poor in developing countries, but they can also subject workers to strenuous and dangerous working conditions. Factory labour has been playing a growing role in the labour markets of developing countries, and the supply chain of many countries for decades.

Join us for an evening of great discussions, intense gameplay, and many, many t-shirts for our 2D customers!

The story starts in Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in India where you begin as young farmers who face hardships such as discrimination and natural disasters while choosing your sacrifices wisely. Eventually you move to Kanpur, the industrial heartland of Uttar Pradesh. Here, as former farmers, you will spend your days in the Bhawani Textiles Complex. To earn a living, you must cut, sew, and tag tirelessly, confined to your production line where only the most profitable workers are allowed to stay on.

In this 75-minute simulation created by ActOct Team and University of Toronto Schools, participants will role play the workers and managers in a factory in India by making mock clothing in a factory line. You will understand the economic incentives that create factories, and the effects that factories have on the urban poor.

You will handle complex decisions that real workers and managers have to make, including whether to leave the job or to lower working conditions, respectively. You will understand how they contribute to factories, and evaluate possible solutions you can act on.

Parking
Metered street parking is available on 102 Avenue and on 106 Street which is free after 6pm on non-event days at Rogers Place.

Location
The House of Sew studio is located in the Co Loft building above Ivory Noir Salon and across from Norquest College. Entrance to the building can be accessed on 106 Street. Please buzz #302 for entry.

Fashion Revolution Week commemorates the collapse of the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh on April 24, 2013 where 1,138 people died and another 2,500 were injured, making it the fourth largest industrial disaster in history.
