Prevention: The Best Medicine - The Importance of Immunization to the Health of Seniors

Put simply, getting vaccinated is one of the most important things you can do to protect your health, especially if you're at higher risk of serious complications. Yet, vaccination rates are still nowhere near where they should be, despite the human and economic toll infectious diseases like flu and pneumonia place on the healthcare system. During this Breathing Policy Forum, we will be examining the topic of adult vaccination from a variety of angles that will be of interest to policy-makers, healthcare professionals and patients.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • Human and economic burden of influenza and pneumonia on the healthcare system
  • How vaccination can help alleviate hallway medicine
  • Immunization as part of overall health
  • Economic impact of preventative medicine
  • What changes need to be made to increase rates of immunization

Speakers include:

  • Bev Black, Patient Advocate who lives with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and has experienced influenza and pneumonia
  • Dr. Dawn Bowdish, Associate Professor, Pathology and Molecular Medicine, McMaster University
  • Dr. Allison McGeer, Microbiologist, Infectious Disease Consultant, Mount Sinai Hospital and University Health Network
  • Dr. Samir Sinha, Director of Geriatrics, Sinai Health System and University Health Network

Admission is free with registration. Seating is limited and offered on a first come, first serve basis. For further information, please contact Monica Kocsmaros at mkocsmaros@lungontario.ca.
