IMPRISONED BODIES: LIBERATION IN THE MIDST OF LIMITATION

Keynote speaker: Dr. Drew Leder

How do prisoners serving life-sentences in extreme confinement survive, and even thrive? The lessons they learn may be applicable to us all as we deal with illness, aging, and other confinements.

Speaker Bio:
Dr. Drew Leder, M.D., Ph.D is a Professor of Philosophy at Loyola University Maryland who writes frequently about the intersection of philosophy and medicine. He is the author of The Absent Body, and a new book, The Distressed Body: Rethinking Illness, Imprisonment, and Healing. This work, as well as another, The Soul Knows No Bars, contains material written with and about men incarcerated in maximum-security institutions, where Dr. Leder volunteers. He is also the author of a series of popular books on cross-cultural spirituality, and has been featured in newspapers and magazines across the country.

About Jehangir Saleh Lecture:
This lecture honours the life of Jehangir Saleh (1985-2013), an extraordinary student of Philosophy and graduate of the Arts & Contemporary Studies program (2009) at Ryerson University. The Jehangir Saleh lecture is made possible through a gift from the family of Noorali & Saker Saleh and friends, in partnership with the Faculty of Arts, Department of Philosophy and the Arts & Contemporary Studies program.

The public lecture will be followed by responses from three individuals with lived experience of chronic illness or incarceration.

Please let us know if we need to make any accessibility or dietary accommodations to ensure your inclusion in this event.
