Description

In 1967, Barbara Jordan became the first black person and the first black woman ever elected to the Texas Legislature and to the US congress from Texas since Reconstruction. She was considered a stateswoman of the highest caliber.

After leaving Congress she devoted herself to the teaching of law at the University of Texas at Austin. The play begins in a lecture hall as Barbara Jordan conducts a graduate class on Political Values and Ethics. In the course of the lecture, Jordan relates aspects of her personal journey through the world of politics. Her dynamic speech at the 1976 Democratic Convention highlights her story.

Jacqueline L. Gafford has been a fixture on the Kansas City theatre scene for nearly 30 years. Her work has been seen at numerous local theatres as actor, stage manager, director and playwright. She has been involved with Theater for Young America, the Coterie, the Unicorn, Rockhurst College, UMKC Theatre, Lawrence Community Theatre, KC MeltingPot Theatre, KC Black Rep and is artistic director of InPlay Theatre Company.

Fran Farah’s directing credits include: Harlem Nights, Taming of the Shrew, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf, Othello, and Edward II. She has staged productions for InPlay, New Directions Theatre, Kansas City Renaissance Festival, the Folly Theater and Theatre for Young America.

$20 per ticket, paid in advance. $25 at the door. This special performance by Jacquee Gafford is a public fundraiser for League of Women Voters of Kansas City MO/Jackson, Clay and Platte Counties.
