Steven Martyn, B.F.A., M.A. (Traditional plant use in the Southern Algonquin Bioregion) . Co-Founder of Livingstone and Greenbloom (Toronto’s first ecological landscaping company 1986), The Algonquin Tea Company (North America’s first local tea company 1999) & The Sacred Gardener (experiential centre for Traditional Earth Wisdom 2012)
In the last thirty years of working intimately with the Earth Steven’s understanding of herbalism, the ecology and human history have come into one living stream of understanding. The herbs, the parade of healers that follow in our destructive wake are the very ones that the land, as well as ourselves, need to bring balance and healing to the way we live. These herbs balance and rebuild both the abused Earth and heal our bodies in the same way. Their medicine, called forth through trauma, miraculously arises from the ground, in the exact same way as the herbs generate an immune reaction in our bodies. But when we, or the Earth are exhausted, from lack of recovery time, our capacity for natural immunity is greatly diminished. Within five years a small patch of clear-cut forest can be well on its way to healing, but a field that has been continually harvested from, may take twenty years to start healing, toward becoming the dynamic diverse forest it was. From this teaching of the Earth it is clear to see that in taking all these heavy antibiotic drugs and immune boosting herbs to deal with disease, we are jumping the gun. They may be effective in the short run, but may also cause more imbalances and deficiencies in the long run. We must first use herbs to balance and rebuild our bodies. And then like the Earth herself our natural innate immune responses will be enough to bring our bodies into their highest functioning form.
