Description

The Medieval Page with Line Fillers

Instructor: Debbie Thompson Wilson

This is a class that will include instruction on illumination, gilding (using real gold leaf), pen-decorated versal capitals, working on real vellum and touch on medieval page layout and design. The first day will be devoted to illuminating and gilding the medieval line-filler* on watercolour paper and a real vellum scrap. These true "miniatures" make great stand-alone artworks and are perfect for scraps of watercolour paper and vellum. *A line filler is a decorative devise that fills the remainder of a line in a manuscript that is not fully occupied by text. They can be patterns, pen swirls, foliate designs or real and imaginary beasts and figures. They were initially popularized in Celtic and pre-Carolingian manuscripts and became very popular in English 14th century manuscripts. The second day we will create pen-decorated versal capital letters & look at medieval page layout & design. Our inspiration will come from the Luttrell Psalter and other 13th and 14th century manuscripts. Suitable for all levels (some watercolour experience helpful)
