The New Frontline: Building Solidarity in 2021
Event Information
About this Event
Join us for The New Frontline: Building Solidarity in 2021, where we will be watching The New Corporation: The Unfortunately Necessary Sequel - sequel to the 2002 documentary film The Corporation; followed by a panel discussion on labour organizing and strategizing frontline worker solidarity. Our hope is to use the film as a platform to galvanize support and solidarity for different progressive social movements - especially labour movements.
The ACWU is working towards a long term goal of a Worker’s Action Centre, focusing on low-wage unrepresented workers. We aim to work with labour partners to build up protections and supports for unrepresented workers and we’d like to use this screening to connect with potential partners.
Following the screening we will host a casual Zoom panel/hang-out to talk about the film and have a community discussion about a Worker’s Action Centre. There will also be time for people to speak to their own frontline organizing and promote any programs focused on addressing social inequities highlighted by the pandemic. Our panellists include Patrick Johnson from UFCW 1518, Nadia Santoro, Eileen Stephens and Nura Ali from ACWU/IATSE B-778, Kaitlyn Matulewic, Executive Director of the Worker Solidarity Network, Chuka Ejeckam from BCFED, Mazdak Gharibnavaz from the Vancouver Tenants Unio, and Devan Ritchie, CUPW Pacific Region Organizer.
We are excited to be using the film to kick off this important dialogue on building solidarity in 2021. #TheNewCorporation reveals how the corporate takeover of society is being justified by the sly rebranding of corporations as socially conscious entities. From gatherings of corporate elites in Davos, to climate change and spiralling inequality; the rise of ultra-right leaders to Covid-19 and racial injustice, the film looks at corporations’ devastating power. Countering this is a groundswell of resistance worldwide as people take to the streets in pursuit of justice and the planet’s future. Join the discussion on January 30th!
The panel will be live at this YouTube link.
