Instructor: Michelle Boyd, Master Spinner

You've learned to spin a pretty good yarn, but now what? This advanced beginner workshop will give you the tools you need to expand your spinning repertoir. We will examine the basics of yarn design, including twists per inch, diameter control, and consideration for specific end uses. Then apply these new technicques to a variety of different fibres. This workshop is intended for beginners who can comforably spin a consistent yarn and may be used as a refresher for experienced spinners as well.

Topics covered include:

  • fibre selection
  • tpi and controlling twist
  • yarn diameter control
  • spinning yarns for specific end uses
  • trouble shooting you yarns
  • spinning beyond wool (new fibre sampler/blends)

Cost $220 includes all materials

Workshop will cover 2 six hour days. 10am - 5pm with 1 hour for lunch. Saturday, March 28 & Sunday, March 29.

The instructor will provide a variety of spinning fibres, including wool, apaca or llama, silk, cotton, and flax.

Students are asked to bring:

  • a spinning wheel in good operating condition
  • lazy Kate
  • niddy noddy
  • zipper lock bags for fibre smaples
  • hand cards (optional)
  • marker for labelling bags
  • notebook and pen for notes

About Michelle

Michelle Boyd is a handspinner and weaver who lives in Olds, Alberta. With a background in art and design, she has been an active member of the fibre arts community in both Fort McMurray and Alberta for the past 35 years. She has achieved her Master Spinner certification and is currently an instructor for that program, as well instructing workshops in spinning and weaving at fibre arts events across North America. For the past two years, she has been working intensively with freestyle weaving techniques based upon the philosophies of SAORI weaving, including having spent a term as Artist in Residence at SAORI Salt Spring in February of 2017. Michelle’s current work explores the possibilities presented by both the technical aspects of handspinning and the freeform approach of SAORI weaving.
