The Paralegal Cup is the only mooting competition in Ontario that is exclusive to paralegal students enrolled in a Certificate or Diploma program. The purpose of the competition is to strengthen student advocacy and critical thinking skills by focusing on oral and written advocacy, professionalism, and resiliency.
Briefly, the mooting competition asks student teams to identify and address the legal issues for both the appellant and the respondent in a selected contemporary Canadian case. The competition requires students to draw on their advocacy, legal research, and legal writing skills as they present ten-minute oral submissions before a panel of judges. Furthermore, teams prepare and submit a written component using a prescribed format.
Building on the success of 2015, this year the Law Society of Upper Canada has invited the Paralegal Cup competition to take place at Osgoode Hall. We are thrilled at the opportunity to highlight the incredible talent of the paralegal student mooters to the entire legal profession.
The 2016 Paralegal Cup will highlight top-tiered students from colleges across Ontario. The first day consists of four mooting rounds followed by a networking hour and the highly anticipated evening dinner celebrating the students’ achievements from the day’s competition. The theme of this year’s Paralegal Cup is Growth, Success and Innovation.
The daytime mooting competition rounds are free for spectators and observers, and we welcome the public to attend the formal celebratory dinner by purchasing tickets. Ticket sales to the our nonprofit dinner formal event help offset costs such as administration and food.
Some of our anticipated guests include the CEO of the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Paralegal Standing Committee, numerous Benchers, members of the Judiciary, Licensees, industry executives and other influential members of the legal industry. In addition to present and future community leaders, we have many leading academics in the field of legal education, including, college executives, Deans, administrators, and other tenured faculty members from colleges across Ontario.
The event serves to be an invaluable opportunity for students to connect with mentors, industry leaders, and future colleagues.
Come and join us in celebrating the paralegal community and its future leaders!
