Event description

Description

The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, and Arts & Humanities in Health & Medicine (AHHM) program at the University of Alberta are pleased to co-host this very special evening presentation:

"The Power of Storytelling to Improve Healthcare"

... with Dr. Verna Yiu, AHS President & CEO

As healthcare in the 21st century charts new frontiers led by breathtaking advancements in technology, there is a danger health systems could lose their focus on patients and families and be blinded to their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Dr. Verna Yiu will discuss how Alberta Health Services (AHS) is utilizing storytelling to help those working in healthcare recognize the power of relationships and understand how those one-on-one connections are crucial to achieving outstanding patient outcomes and experiences. Dr. Yiu’s presentation will include examples of AHS multimedia storytelling.

Dr. Verna Yiu is a longtime front-line care provider and healthcare administrator who has served as President and CEO of Alberta Health Services (AHS), Canada’s first and largest province-wide health system, since January 2016. A firm believer in the power of relationships and collaboration, Dr. Yiu has used her leadership skills to bring together clinicians, researchers, policymakers, patients and families in order to drive continuous learning and patient-focused improvements in healthcare outcomes and experiences. She continues to practice as a pediatric nephrologist and is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta.

Please join us for Dr. Yiu's presentation, followed by an interactive Q&A session with the audience ... as well as a reception sponsored by the AHHM program, which will include an opportunity to view digital stories and posters about digital storytelling and healthcare.

Everyone is welcome! Admission is FREE.

This event is hosted by Dr. Dennis Kunimoto, Acting Dean, and Dr. Pamela Brett-MacLean, Director, AHHM Program, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB.
