Description

Privatizing Humanitarianism Or Harnessing Public Compassion? - A talk from Dr. Pierre-André Thériault

Brought to you by the Canadian Bar Association's Northwest Territories Branch and the Institute of Public Administration of Canada - Northwest Territories Region

The global refugee crisis is one of the most critical challenges of our time.

By the end of 2016, there were 65.6 million people forcibly displaced globally because of violence, persecution or armed conflict - the highest number ever recorded. Canada’s private sponsorship of refugees program is unique in the world, and many countries are now looking to replicate the Canadian model. While refugee private sponsorship has attracted increased public attention in Canada over the past two years, Canada’s refugee resettlement program has a long history.

Alongside the CBA-NT, IPAC-NWT presents a talk from Dr. Pierre-André Thériault, a doctoral candidate at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, Ontario.

This talk will focus on the origins, evolution and current challenges of Canada’s private sponsorship of refugees program, and the role private sponsorship can play in todays global refugee crisis.
