The Regulation of Cannabis: The Future of the Ethical and Regulatory Enviro...
Mon, 24 April 2017, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM EDT
The Ted Rogers Leadership Centre at Ryerson University is pleased to announce the next in its series of public symposia.
There is an overwhelming surge of public interest around cannabis legalization in Canada. As a policy trailblazer, Ryerson has identified a need to bring experts together to discuss the need for vigorous regulation development. Governments regulate both to protect the public interest and to maintain a level playing field among competitors. But there are unique challenges in regulating a 'disruptive’ product, sale of which raises both ethical as well as business challenges.
Ryerson’s Cannabis Symposium will bring together a wide range of voices from industry, government, academia and civil society to discuss this important issue.
The Honourable Anne McLellan, Chair of the Government of Canada’s Task Force on Cannabis Legalization and Regulation, will kick off the discussion by walking participants through the current policy environment and key challenges in developing a regulatory framework.
McLellan’s keynote will be followed by a very brief primer on the science of cannabis, by Ryerson's own Prof Lesley G Campbell.
The bulk of the 2nd hour of the event will consist of a panel discussion on “Shaping the Regulatory Framework: A Stakeholder Perspective.” The panel will be moderated by Darrell Dexter, Chair of Cannabis Connect. Confirmed panelists include:
Joan Weir, Director, Health and Dental Policy, Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association
Hugo Alves, Partner, Bennet Jones (specialist in Cannabis law)
Dr. Joanna Henderson, Centre for Addictions and Mental Health
Vic Neufeld, CEO, Aphria
