You'll see inside the project file for You Got Me (Jeff Olson Remix) by Nuela Charles. If you haven't heard it, you can listen / download the tune at www.jeffolson.ca. We won't spend much time on this, as I want to get hands on, and show you the beginning of the process.
Next we're going to look at Lily Allen's "The Fear".
2 - play these over and over again this week. Especially the vocal. Develop your vision, even start a remix (and bring it)!
We'll open up the stems in my DAW (Cubase) and have a look. I use various VST's, most of which are available for Ableton, FL Studio, Logic, Pro Tools, Reaper, etc.
We'll briefly touch on tempo / alignment.
We'll talk about key / melody - how to find it, how to figure out the chords quickly. We'll look at a couple of advanced options for re-harmonizing, using the music to create tension and release. Time permitting, we can look at a couple of musical options for Vocal Manipulation too.
We'll tear up stems, and I'll show you how I might chop them, mix them, abandon them, slice & dice, throw them through the ol' Kitchen Maid. You'll see me using MIDI to do some of this, mapping notes to plugins, and sometimes you'll see me just using audio, creating "recordings" - a very simple, functional, and effective tool.
Shaping sounds from the stems can often sound and fit the mix easily, rather than simply adding a lot of "kit sounds". We'll look at how to manipulate existing stems into your remix, no matter what the style you are going for.
The techniques and ideas should inspire, and give you new methods, ideas, and useful "rules" to use in ANY genre. We'll have some time at the end for questions as well!
Pre-Req's!!!
You should already know:
1. how to find and import stems into your DAW
2. how to add VST plugins for FX & Instruments
3. how to mix using insert & send FX
4. how to record or program notes, drums, etc.
Registration is limited to 6, so we can have a small & focused group. I work on a 32" screen, so everyone can see what's going on. Get ready to meet with other producers, gain ideas, and get your creativity flowing!
You can bring your ticket on your phone. If you need to cancel, you must do so before Thursday at 1pm, 48 hours before the event in order to get a refund.
If you need to contact me ahead of time, you can use jeff [at] phoneticsound.com, or ask a public question in the facebook thread: https://www.facebook.com/groups/179589162091846/permalink/634382429945848/
You can preview the Lily Allen tune, and hear what I did one evening with it here:
Jeff Olson has been making music since 1995. His first recording and live mixing projects started in the late 90's, and since then he has spent well over 5,000 hours mixing music live and in the studio. He studied piano locally from age seven, and then from renowned pianist Dr. Ping-Shan Liao in college. He began writing & composing music in his mid-teens, and by 17 had already begun composing some early music for the World Wide Web.
By the end of his first year of post-secondary, he was recording almost every graduate music recital, and had other clients beginning EP's and singles. He began and led an original band, writing all the music and lyrics. In 2007 he moved his studio, Phoneticsound to St. Albert where he continued recording and producing, and begun to focus on mixing.
Jeff currently continues to compose for various web projects, engineer the mixes and masters of his clients, and has been expanding a set of live performance electronic music.
