The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui
Come visit a 1930s Chicago speakeasy and hear a story about one Arturo Ui, a small-time gangster with big-time ambitions! A darkly funny satire with a bitter aftertaste, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui was written by Bertolt Brecht in 1941 as he fled persecution from Hitler and the Nazis. Drawing parallels between Chicago gangsters and the Nazis, Brecht asks his audience to think about how, with different choices, the rise of small-time gangsters might, in future times and places, be resisted.
