Biography
Prof. Uri Nir leads the laboratory for "Cancer metabolism" research in the Faculty of Life-
Sciences at Bar-Ilan University, Israel. Between the years 2010-2014 Prof. Nir served as the
dean of the Faculty and he is currently serving as the Dean of students of the university. Outside
of the university, Prof. Nir served as the chairmen of the "Israeli Society for Developmental
Biology" and currently he is a member of the steering and scientific advisory boards of the
"Israel Cancer Association" and the "Israel Society for Cancer Research".
Nir gained his Ph.D. degree from the Weizmann Institute of Sciences in Israel. He then went on
for a post-doctoral training in the "Hormone-Research Institute" at the University of California
San-Francisco, CA., USA. Since 1988 Prof. Nir is a faculty member in the Faculty of Life-
Sciences at Bar-Ilan University. The main research interests of the Nir's group are 1.
Characterization and deciphering the unique and reprogrammed metabolic and energy generation
systems of cancer cells. 2. Development of new anti-cancer drugs which efficiently and
selectively target key components in the energy generation systems of malignant cells. One such
compound termed E260 is being progressed toward phase I clinical trials in humans.
