Description

The Sense of Beauty

Brought to you by The Dante Aligheri Society of BC and UBC's Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver and ARPICO.

THE SENSE OF BEAUTY - A FILM BY VALERIO JALONGO

In association with the Dante Alighieri Society, ARPICO presents the screening of the documentary "The Sense of Beauty" by Italian director Valerio Jalongo, who will also be in attendance during the screening. Director Jalongo has worked alongside scientists in the world's largest physics laboratory, CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, to explore, narrate and document the fascination behind the most fundamental physics questions, which manages to intrigue artists, philosophers and poets as much as it does scientists.
What is hidden behind the visible reality, made of clearly outlined solid bodies? A continuous dance of countless particles in a constant state of motion.

researchitaly.it writes:
The documentary film The Sense of Beauty, a Switzerland-Italy production directed by Valerio Jalongo, will take us on a journey to discover this constant flow – which is the world of quantum physics. The documentary film, premiered in Rome and Milan, will be released in Italian cinemas on 21 and 22 November 2017.

The Sense of Beauty is a journey, both physical and metaphorical, along the France-Switzerland border, between science and art, between understanding and imagination.

The destination is the CERN in Geneva, the European research centre that hosts the Large Hadron Collider, a giant and powerful underground particle accelerator. A “poetic machine”, according to Jalongo, because it is aimed only at knowledge. But it is also a real source of inspiration for a generation of innovative artists, willing to give a new shape to the invisible.

Jalongo’s journey to CERN soon becomes an opportunity for a multivoiced dialogue between physicists and artists on the nature of reality, and its representation. In this long-distance, never predictable dialogue, we come across scientists that in their research activity are guided by the criterion of beauty, and artists fascinated by nature.

The strongest fascination that is present throughout the film – as the title suggests – is that scientific investigation is driven precisely by the sense of beauty that we find in nature, understood as order, simplicity, organization. But does beauty really belong to reality or is it in the eyes of those who look?

The old philosophical question does not find, as is only right, a definitive answer. In presenting the question again, the film has the merit of taking us into the laboratories of the large European centre for nuclear physics, showing us the faces and voices of those who work there: a large, peaceful team of men and women of different ages, geographical origin, beliefs, who share the same passion for knowledge.

Screening Event starts at 6:30 pm.

Tickets are Needed

  • Tickets are FREE, but all individuals are requested to obtain "free-admission" tickets on Event Brite site due to limited seating at the venue. Organizers need accurate registration numbers to manage wait lists and prepare name tags.
  • All ARPICO events are 100% staffed by volunteer organizers and helpers, however, room rental, stationery, and guest refreshments are costs incurred and underwritten by members of ARPICO. Therefore to be fair, all audience participants are asked to donate to the best of their ability at the door to "help" defray costs of the event.

Everyone is welcome. See you there!
