OBFF BLACK MARKET - The Show Must Go On! Filming in a Time of Covid

About this event

This panel will feature Black Filmmakers from Ottawa and Ontario who will discuss the challenges they have faced getting their films made over the last year. We will learn how they overcame the obstacles created by the pandemic and were successful in adapting to the changes.

  • Moderator: Patric McCormack - Managing Director CRANIUM

Patrick is an arts manager and creative with 25+ years of experience traversing various roles. With deep roots in hip-hop music and culture, Patrick has produced records, festivals and events along with a video series documenting Canada’s hip-hop music scene.

Panelists:

  • Tamar Bird - Film & Television Producer

Tamar is a mother, a maker, a doer. That’s who Tamar Bird is as a person and a producer. Her goal as a producer is to help create art that alters perception, opens a dialogue for change and gives more power to the people who are deemed powerless.

  • Zainab Muse - CEO & Founder, Wingd Inc.

Zainab is the producer of Creatorland, now broadcasting on CBC. Her second documentary, Know Her Name, is currently in development as it follows the impact that historic filmmakers had on the representation of minorities and feminism in film.

  • Jehu Jacob Mahautiere - Filmmaker

Jehu is an Ottawa-based filmmaker who has been capturing footage since 2015 for a diverse range of private clients and non-profit organizations. Jehu is truly a global citizen. He started travelling the globe at an early age and was exposed to a wide variety of cultures which developed his passion for equality, human rights and justice. Behind his lens, Jehu’s goal is to evoke emotions and to have his audience question who we are as a society – especially by focusing on untold stories of those who may be voiceless.

  • Tamara Dawit - Producer and Director

Based between Canada and Ethiopia. She runs the production company Gobez Media which produces East African film, TV, digital and music content. After the short film, Grandma Knows Best (2014) she directed the feature documentary Finding Sally which had its North American premiere at the Hot Docs documentary festival in 2020. She is currently directing the feature documentary The Plot and producing the feature drama Last Tears of the Deceased, and the feature documentary Made in Ethiopia. Tamara has produced documentary and digital content for CBC News, MTV, Radio-Canada, NHK, and others. She was a resident in Docs in Progress, the Logan Non-Fiction Residency and is an alumnus of Berlinale Talents, Durban Talents, Rotterdam Lab, Apost, and EAVE.
