Event description
The Uninvited Guest: Stories of Hospitality from the Medieval North

About this Event

A stranger presses his ear to the hall door and listens enviously to the music inside. A vine-covered rider bursts into the feast and taunts the revelers with a strange game. These – and other – stories of otherworldly visitors whisper old understandings of hospitality from the medieval North.

James Nowak tells the oldest stories in the English language to modern audiences. He studied the medieval storytelling traditions of Northern Europe at the University of Toronto, where he worked on the Dictionary of Old English. In 2018, he was invited to tell Beowulf in remote Northern Iceland. His essay on Icelandic myth and legend was published in issue 12 of Dark Mountain.

Testimonials

“James was amazing – I'll be haunted by his presentation forever.” -JL in Toronto

“Every single person spoke passionately – in awe, really – about the power of his storytelling. No one had ever had such an experience ... Words like ‘extraordinary,’ ‘entrancing’ and ‘spellbinding’ were used.” -SE in Toronto
