TALKS AND DISCUSSIONS

Engaging Users through Gamification

Sabrina Bruehwiler, Gamification Consultant and Designer @ The Octalysis Group

In the UK an 11-64 year old player spends 8.8h per week on games. With 36.4m players in the UK that makes a total of 28.2bn hours per week spent on games!

Gamification is commonly referred to as the use of Game Elements and Techniques in non-game context, placing an emphasis on human motivation as opposed to function focused design. In her talk, Sabrina will explore The Octalysis Framework developed by her business. Created by Yu-kai Chou, the framework is based on an octagon shape, with 8 core drives of human motivation representing each side. Derived from over 10 years of in-depth research and study, it is now the most popular and complete Gamification Framework worldwide.

Sabrina believes in the transformation of the World through Gameful and Behavioural Design. Sabrina's aim is to help you have a more positive impact on your environment and society through Gamification; engaging your users through a more motivated, pleasurable experience.

Sabrina Bruehwiler is a Business Consultant specialised in Gamification and Behavioural Design with over 8 years of experience in Visual Communication and User focused Design.

Sabrina has lead and consulted startups in Africa and Europe, to help improve customer engagement through behavioural science and game design. Sabrina has consulted for the Octalysis Group with clients including Google, Accenture, Ebay, Lego, IBM, Tesla and Yahoo and is delivering projects based on the world-renowned work of Yu-kai Chou. Sabrina is a keen speaker and wants to further support the industry as an international keynote speaker, having recently spoken at events in Greece and the UK and due to talk at upcoming Conferences in the Ukraine and Turkey.

The Shadow Within All our Design Reviews

Richard McMurray, Designer @ IBM

Working in teams and as designers we face many challenges both externally and internally within ourselves. To become better designers and leaders we first need to contend with our ego!

In his talk Richard will aid you in becoming become more aware of your ego in your design critiques and reviews and will offer you three ways of grappling with it!

Richard McMurray has been employed as a designer at IBM for the past three years, currently working in their Chief Information Office. Prior to this he spent many years in the world of business and engineering looking at how different teams work. Richard is a proud mancunian and loves public speaking!

Intro to sketchnotes

Chris Spalton, UX consultant @ Foolproof

In this talk, Chris will look at what sketchnotes are, why they offer benefits and how they can be used in UX. Then, in true UX style, we will get a little more hands on, with a few fun drawing tasks!

Chris is a big visual thinking advocate, keen to encourage people to break through the fear of bad drawing and spread the use of doodling and visual notetaking to capture meetings, and communicate concepts and ideas in an engaging and some times humorous way, and using these techniques to help get yourself, your team and your clients on the same page.
