Event description

Description

Come for a walk and embroider your path on a map of the city with artist Bekk Wells.

Participants are given a handmade, screen-printed cushion depicting an unlabeled map of a part of Downtown Edmonton. In small groups, they are directed to navigate through the area, stopping to stitch their path on the map, creating a tangible record of their walk that is theirs to keep. No previous needlework experience is required and all supplies are provided. Your embroidered cushion will be yours to keep!

Walks will begin and end at Capital Plaza, but paticipants are free to conclude their walk when they choose.

Artist Bio

Bekk Wells was born in Northern Alberta and has lived in various locations throughout the province. He has a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Lethbridge, where he also studied art, and a Master of Arts in Art and Science from Central Saint Martins in London, England. He has exhibited his work at the Royal Society and the Tate Exchange, and in 2018 curated an independent exhibition in a South London warehouse. He is interested in the role of art in forging connections between the tangible and the abstract. His recent work focuses on experience, knowledge and materials.

Artist Statement

I am interested in the meanings we ascribe to objects and the use of physical models to describe and explain complex phenomena. Also of interest to me is the use of space as a metaphor for intangible states of being: how we create a sense of ‘where we are’ both literally and metaphorically.

The Walking Stitch was devised as an exploration of urban space and an investigation into the ability of material objects to enhance spatial understanding. Taking inspiration from the Situationists’ dérive, in which small groups of people are encouraged to drift through their city along new and unfamiliar routes, The Walking Stitch blends urban wandering with practices of making.

By attempting to navigate an unlabeled map, commonplace urban routines are interrupted, and we are forced to pay particular attention to the shape of the city. Through the combined processes of walking and stitching, we reexamine what it means to be in a place, and how these experiences of place can be represented.
