Event description

Description

Join us on the eve of summer for a taste of welcome and community.

The Welcome Table - Come and experience contagious courage in an evening of feasting, music, and stories.
Around a shared table, hear about leaving behind all you have known as you flee from danger.

Learn from our speaker how the need to belong is a cause of extremism, while being accepted and known is an antidote.

Our evening will feature refugees’ stories, live music, silent auction, Middle Eastern cuisine, a cash craft brewery and wine bar. Each table will be hosted by a community member.

Our Guest Speaker: Mohammad Moheq

Seven years ago, Mohammad and his family arrived in BC as refugee claimants and became part of Journey Home Community.

After obtaining his Canadian Permanent Residency, Mohammad was invited back to Afghanistan as an advisor to the President and to assist in countering religious extremism.

A few months ago he was appointed as Afghanistan’s Ambassador to Egypt. An Islamic scholar, published author and a reformist, Mohammad speaks and writes to counteract radicalization and provide a moderate voice in today’s religious environment.

Our Guest Musicians: Karen & Katie

This musical Vancouver duo - Katie Green & Karen Hefford - focuses primarily on the traditional folk music of North America. With the combined power of piano, accordion, fiddle, guitar and two voices, love tackling all types of traditional music. Their album entitled “Settler’s Songs of the Pacific Northwest”, features some of the struggles and triumphs of our earliest newcomers to BC.

The journey of belonging often starts at the Welcome Table.

Through food and stories – we begin to understand.
