Event description
Join us to explore the importance of Performance Validity Testing across the lifespan and the rapidly developing literature on this topic.

About this Event

Workshop Description:

Incorporating performance validity tests as part of every adult neuropsychological evaluation is now the standard of care. The importance of performance validity assessment in child and adolescent evaluations is increasingly recognized, and this is reflected in the rapidly developing literature on this topic. Contemporary research has provided information regarding the prevalence of invalid test performance among children and adults. The research outlines the frequency that performance validity tests are used during pediatric and adult evaluations, potential factors underlying an individual’s failure to provide their best effort on testing, and the development of objective methods of assessing performance validity in various populations.

Part one of the workshop will focus on performance validity testing in evaluations of children and adolescents. The session will provide an overview of the current literature on pediatric performance validity assessment, with an emphasis on the need for evaluating best effort in clinical and school settings when making diagnostic decisions about children and youth based on scores from maximum performance tests such as measures of IQ, academic achievement, and a variety of neuropsychological tests. The workshop will also provide a detailed introduction to the Pediatric Performance Validity Test Suite™ (PdPVTS™), a new digital performance validity measure developed specifically for use with children and adolescents.

Part two of the program will explore performance validity testing in adult evaluations using the Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM). The workshop is designed to provide attendees with an historical overview of the development and utilization of the TOMM as well as development to date of the first revision of the TOMM (TOMM 2). The basic psychometric properties of the TOMM/TOMM 2 will be reviewed along with the appropriate application and interpretation of the TOMM/TOMM 2 results in both clinical and forensic practice. In addition, the workshop will outline research on the TOMM over the past 20 years and what’s new for the TOMM 2.

Please note, CE/CPD credits will only be awarded upon proof of attending the workshop for the full duration.

Learning objectives:

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Explain the rationale and importance of including performance validity assessments in pediatric neuropsychological, psychoeducational, and related diagnostic evaluations whether the evaluation is completed for clinical or forensic purposes.

• Define the unique details of the development of measures of effort and performance validity.

• Describe the development and psychometric characteristics of the Pediatric Performance Validity Test Suite and TOMM 2.

• Administer and interpret the scores from the new Pediatric Performance Validity Test Suite.

• Identify and apply the current “best practice guidelines” involving the utilization of performance validity measures in clinical, educational and forensic evaluations.

• Critically consider the application of various cut-off scores and decision rules for the TOMM/TOMM 2 regarding performance invalidity in an individual examinee.

Who should attend?

Clinicians who conduct or are interested in psychological, neuropsychological, or psychoeducational evaluations of youth, adolescents and adults in clinical, educational, or forensic settings. Professionals who are interested in using PVTs in their own practice and existing users of the TOMM.
