Event description

Description

Theraplay® is a child and family therapy based on the natural patterns of playful, healthy interaction between parent and child. It is used to build and enhance attachment, self-esteem, trust in others, and joyful engagement. Theraplay® interactions focus on four essential qualities found in parent-child relationships: Structure, Engagement, Nurture, and Challenge, creating an active, emotional connection between the child and parent or caregiver.

Theraplay replicate a normative and healthy pattern of interactions that occur between parents and young children (Jernberg and Booth, 1999). It is based on attachment theory, the concept that the first relationship a child has will forms the template for all other relationships. If a child's first attachment is neither safe nor secure, the child will struggle throughout development in forming health connections with others. This is supported by Attachment research around the world (Rutter, 1994). Theraplay works to build health connections within the developmental stage where the attachment process was disrupted and the child’s emotional growth stopped. Theraplay meets the child at his/her emotional level often much younger than the chronological age. By creating a positive experience of, attuned attention, warm and nurturing support, a feeling of value and importance is fostered. Through receiving consistent and responsive caring from a caregiver, the child is better equipped to repair the disruptions and regain the regulation in his/her feelings that were missing in early childhood.
