Description

Are you confident approaching and handling a horse in a supervised environment, but you’re interested in a more hands-on experience in the barn and on the track? Have you ever wanted to harness and jog a standardbred horse with skilled supervision?

TheStable.ca Summer School 201: Barn & Track is an intermediate session for people with a basic understanding of racehorses and horse racing and a desire to learn and do more, including jogging one of the horses (in a double-seat jog cart, accompanied by one of our trainers).

    - Breed overview – speed evolution (i.e., bloodlines)
    - Breeding techniques (i.e., live cover vs. artificial)

    - Prepping for jogging, training
    - Shoeing (i.e., cleaning out feet, choosing the right shoe)
    - Race day care (i.e., warming-up, feed and supplements, racing regulations, post-race care)

  • Horse handling
    - Harnessing and stripping a horse
    - Jogging a horse (accompanied by one of our trainers)
    - Sending a horse to the track/ Receiving a horse from the track
    - Cooling out’ a horse
    - Bathing a horse
    - ‘Putting away’ a horse (i.e., wrapping legs)

  • Equipment
    - Trotting vs. pacing equipment
    - Hopples (i.e., types, proper length)
    - Bridles (i.e., types)
    - Racebikes (i.e., sulky) vs. jog carts
    - Proper harness fit

What activities to expect in this course:

  • Feeding and handling a horse
  • Brushing and leading a horse
  • Entering a stall to harness a horse
  • Jogging a horse on the track (accompanied by a trainer)
  • Bathing/stripping a horse in the wash-rack
  • Picking a horse’s feet/putting away a horse

When you’re finished with this course, you’ll have had intermediate hands on experience with standardbred horses in the barn and on the track. You’ll receive advanced techniques for caring for standardbred horses and you’ll learn how to harness and jog a standardbred horse in a supervised environment.

Instructor: Nelly Boileau

Nelly is a full-time caretaker with TheStable.ca and is a third-generation horseperson. Both of her parents heil from harness racing families. Her family bred, owned and raced horses in her native Quebec where her father was also a driver.

While she has been caring for Standardbred racehorses her entire life, she also spent several years in retail management and training and has a real passion for sharing her love for Standardbred horses.

Trainer: Harry Poulton

Veteran renowned trainer Harry Poulton has been with TheStable.ca since 2017. He is best-known as the conditioner of $1M Meadowlands Pace winners, and Hall Of Famers, On The Road Again and Matts Scooter. Harry has trained horses with 3,800 starts, almost 600 wins and $7.7M in purse earnings.

FAQs

Are there minimum age requirements to enter the event?
Yes, attendees must be at least 10, and children under 16 must be accompanied by a paying adult.

What's the refund policy?
Sorry, no refunds. You can transfer your ticket to another person, though.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?
Yes.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?
Yes.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
No.

Will there be any food or drinks available?
No, there won’t be any food or drinks available. Please bring your own water bottle, coffee, etc.

How large are the classes?
Each class is a max. of 10 people, with 2 instructors.

Are there washroom facilities?
Yes, there are washroom facilities available.

Do I need to be a current client of TheStable.ca to participate?
No, everyone is welcome to register.

Will these events run rain or shine?
Yes. The 101 course is conducted entirely inside the barn. The 201 course includes some jogging on the track. If the rain is mild, we will provide mud suits. If stormy weather is extreme and prolonged, we will skip the track work and do extra course work in the barn.

Is it safe?
You will be required to sign a liability waiver when you arrive. This is standard practice and confirms your understanding and acknowledgement that horses can be unpredictable and dangerous animals, given their size. Our instructors are professional horsepeople with many decades of combined experience and the racehorses chosen for our Summer School program are selected for their gentle and social demeanour.

What if I want to participate in the course but don’t want to do all activities offered in the course?
You won’t have to do anything you’re not comfortable with.

What should I wear?
Not your Sunday’s finest! You’ll get dirty. Dress for the weather; there is no air-conditioning in the barn. You must wear closed-toe shoes or boots (sneakers are fine).

Do I need to bring anything?
Just a drink and/or snack if you want one (no food or beverage is available on-site). For the 201 course, we will provide helmets and safety vests.

How do I get there and where do I park?
We are located at Tomiko Training Centre, 210 Campbellville Rd. in Puslinch, ON. You will receive emailed instructions about where to park a few days before the event.
