Event description

Description

Particularly over the last decade, educators and systems of education have embraced design-based processes, which through purposeful thought and action, seek to foster teaching and learning experiences that are authentic, meaningful, and responsive to student needs. Premised on the view that students learn most deeply through putting though to form, within such classrooms, students are given opportunities to identify and work towards solving complex and challenging issues and problems in their communities and world. However, this still emergent vision for education opens up many questions including the implications this has for pedagogy and assessment, along with how teachers can be best supported in this work.

Seeking insights into such questions, the purpose of this symposium is for practitioners and researchers to engage in a daylong discussion around how design based processes are currently being understood and taken up in K-12 contexts.

Outcomes:

-To establish a network of researchers and practitioners who will meet on a regular basis;

-Share how educators are currently engaging design based processes in their classrooms and schools including the opportunities and challenges;

-Share and contribute to a review of the research literature on the trends and challenges;

-Establish a community of research/practice; and

-Identify research projects focusing on teachers as designers.
