THP PALS Recertification Course

About the Program

THP PALS Provider Renewal Course

The PALS Provider Renewal course is a fast-paced course. It is designed for proficient PALS providers who regularly direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies in critically ill or injured children. This course assumes a comprehensive awareness, knowledge and skill proficiency in PALS concepts, and is best suited for providers who use these skills frequently and therefore require limited practice to be successful.

Learners will practice and apply their knowledge to case scenarios applying the proven systematic approach to pediatric assessment, treatment algorithms and coordinated high-performance team dynamics, in both team leader and team member roles.

Precourse Requirements and How to Prepare

The PALS Renewal Course is designed to teach you the lifesaving skills required to be both a team member and a team leader in either an in-hospital or an out-of-hospital setting. Due to the fact that the PALS Renewal Course covers extensive material in a short time, you will need to prepare for the course beforehand.

You must adequately prepare for the course by doing the following:

  1. Review and understand the information in your PALS Provider Manual and on the Student Website. Pay particular attention to the systematic approach to pediatric assessment, the evaluate-identify-intervene sequence, and the management of respiratory and circulatory abnormalities.

  2. Complete the Precourse Self-Assessment on the Student Website (https://resuscitation.heartandstroke.ca). Please note that it is MANDATORY for you to provide your Precourse Self-Assessment results certificate when you check in for your course. A passing score of 70% or above is required. You can take the Precourse Self-Assessment as many times as needed to achieve a passing score. You must bring the printout of your score with you to the PALS Renewal Course. If you arrive for the course without proof of successful completion of the Precourse Self-Assessment, you may not be allowed to participate in the course. For additional details on how to access the Precourse Assessment, please go to Page 10 in your PALS Provider Manual.

  3. Current BLS certification is required. Be prepared to pass the Child CPR and AED Skills Testing Checklist and Infant CPR Skills Testing Checklist. You will not be taught how to do CPR or how to use an AED during the course. The resuscitation scenarios require that your BLS skills and knowledge are current. Review and understand all 2015 BLS guidelines, especially as they relate to pediatric patients.

  4. Be familiar with the PALS algorithms and flowcharts so that you can apply them to clinical scenarios. Note that the PALS Renewal Course does not present the details of each algorithm.

  5. Review the Learning Station Competency Checklists in your textbook to gain a clear understanding of how you will be evaluated during the course.

Materials to Bring to Course:

  1. PALS Provider book. A PALS pocket card is recommended.

  2. Stethoscope

  3. Course pre-test result.

What This Course Does Not Cover

The PALS Renewal Course does not teach CPR, ECG rhythm identification, PALS pharmacology, or algorithms. If you do not learn and understand the ECG and pharmacology information in the Precourse Self-Assessment, it is unlikely that you can successfully complete the PALS Renewal Course. You will not be taught how to read or interpret ECG rhythm strips in the course, nor will you be taught details about PALS pharmacology.

It is essential that you bring your PALS Precourse Self-Assessment results certificate with you on Day #1 of the course. Please also bring your BLS and PALS certification, PALS Provider Manual, stethescope and wear comfortable clothes to class for both days; you will need all your materials during each lesson in the course. If you do not have a PALS pocket card you will be able to purchase the one for $10.00 on site.

Materials to Bring to Course:

1) PALS Provider book. A PALS pocket card is recommended.

2) Stethoscope.

3) Course pre-test result.
